14 Views of Kyoto (Tower)

Kyoto Tower has been viewed by many not as a majestic symbol of the city, but an eyesore. Although it doesn’t blend very well with the iconic historical feel of the city, anyone would agree that it is a hard-to-miss, bold feature of the rising cityscape. For certain, Kyoto is part of Japan, one of world’s leading countries in technological development, but the former eastern capital assumes the additional difficult responsibility of representing its past. Where do antiquity and modernity meet in Japan? Kyoto? Do they mingle or clash?

Note: This small collection of photographs was taken while abroad on the Associated Kyoto Program during Spring Semester 2008, to fulfill the final photo essay project requirements for the class, “Kyoto: A Photographic Profile” taught by Prof. Chester Michalik from Smith College. Pictures were taken using a Sony DSC-T10.
